Call for Applicants: Seminar on Teaching and Learning in Philosophy
Location: Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI
Eligibility: Current Graduate Students or Recent (2020 forward) PhDs
Updated Application Deadline: April 26, 2026 May 10, 2026
Through readings and interactive experiences, seminar participants reflect with others to discern how to strengthen their pedagogical choices. Participants study how to identify and select challenging and transformative learning goals and, by understanding the principles of integrated course design, examine how to guide students to the successful achievement of these goals. Topics include preparing to teach (for example, syllabus design), developing learning-centered philosophy classes, using traditional and non-traditional methods of assessment, and engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning. The friendships and collegial relationships built here can last a lifetime.
Attendance: This is a face-to-face only experience, in conjunction with the American Association of Philosophy Teachers Workshop-Conference. Participants are required to attend all sessions, which are four hours each morning, July 23-26. A voluntary social gathering will take place on the evening of July 22.
Seminar Facilitators: Jerry Green (lead), Stephen Bloch-Schulman, Paul Green
Fees & Waivers: Participants are encouraged to attend AAPT Conference sessions in the afternoons and evenings. The registration fee for the AAPT conference is waived for seminar participants. A small stipend (approx. $300) to partially offset room, board, and travel expenses will also be provided.
