CFA: The Mentor Observation Program for Small Philosophy Departments

Faculty in small philosophy programs often lack access to effective feedback about teaching. Such feedback may come from faculty in other departments who are not familiar with prevailing practices for teaching philosophy, or from a very limited number of philosophy colleagues. The Mentor Observation Program for Small Philosophy Departments (MOP) offers faculty in small (one to three person) departments two semesters of support (Spring 2025-Fall 2025) from mentors trained by the American Association of Philosophy Teachers. Protégés from joint departments, such as Religion and Philosophy Departments, are also welcome. Mentors will remotely observe early-career faculty (tenure-track, visiting, lecturer, or adjunct and contingent) and provide structured feedback. Protégés will develop pedagogical tools to improve their teaching and have the opportunity to discuss their teaching with colleagues outside of their institution.

We are grateful to the American Philosophical Association Small Grant Program for funding MOP’s first year.

Applications for protégés are due September 1, 2024.
