Call for Proposals: AAPT Workshop-Conference Master Class

Update: the submission deadline for this CFP has been extended to January 19, with notification of acceptance no later than January 31st.

The American Association for Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) is soliciting proposals for a master class session at the 2024 AAPT Workshop-Conference, to be held at Otterbein University on July 24-28, 2024.

During the 2022 AAPT workshop, we tried something new: we made time to offer a master teacher the chance to ‘teach’ us, to engage us in an unusual and innovative pedagogy. The teacher led the session like it was a class and the rest of us got to enjoy the excitement, surprise, and questions that came from returning to the student role.

The experience was well-received and we want to open up the opportunity for anyone with a genuinely innovative pedagogy to share, something that is engaging, collaborative, and memorable.

We are, therefore, calling for proposals for a mock 90-minute class, which will include the participants at the workshop as mock students. Proposals should clearly articulate what the goal of the class will be and how that will inform what participants will be doing during the class; proposals should also address how you will deal with students in the back row looking up sports scores on their laptops.

N.B. We are not, maybe, the most studious of mock-students, so no prior reading can be assigned. Or it can be assigned, but we won’t do it anyway. But we are game for whatever mischief and fun you might have in mind, as long as we don’t have a test at the end.

Guidelines for submissions:

  1. Proposals of 500-750 words should be submitted as .pdf attachments via https://forms.gle/v3yTyMw9pAZomj8f8 until January 19, 2023.
  2. A 1-2 page teaching CV will also be required.
  3. Supporting material such as syllabi or handouts are welcome and may be attached as .pdf attachments.
  4. The organizing committee will aim to notify all submitters by January 31, 2024.
