Call for panelists: “Amplifying Philosophy in the Face of Existential Threats”
As many of us are painfully aware, philosophy has been facing a number of “existential threats” as humanities enrollments decline—perhaps most vividly portrayed in the New Yorker’s “The End of the English Major”. Philosophy departments around the country—in a wide variety of schools—have been facing program reduction. The AAPT is calling for panelists attending the 2024 Workshop-Conference on Teaching Philosophy at Otterbein University (July 24–28, 2024) who can offer insights about surviving the process or building programs that are thriving and not threatened. Examples include (but are not limited to!) what panelists’ departments have gone through, strategies for offering courses and curriculum that resonate with both students and administration, tips and tools for arguing for the value of the program, where things seem headed, or possible models for the future. Panelists would be asked to speak for about 5 minutes each, and moderated discussion would follow to fill a 90-minute session. If you are interested in presenting, please email Erica Stonestreet (estonestreet@csbsju.edu) by January 8, 2024 with a short explanation for why you believe you would be a good fit for this panel.
