The American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) invites proposals for the AAPT session at the upcoming Central APA meeting in Chicago (2/17-2/20 2010).

The topic for the AAPT session is "Teaching Modern Philosophy Survey Courses."

  • Courses in Modern Philosophy are an essential feature of many philosophy degree programs.  However, they confront philosophy teachers with a number of challenges.  Should one end a Modern Philosophy survey course with Kant or with Hume?  If Kant is the endpoint, how does one discuss his philosophy in a meaningful way in one or two weeks?  How does one avoid the impression that Modern Philosophy is an all male affair?  Can one include Spinoza’s “Ethics” without creating the impression that his “Ethics” is mere metaphysics? What is the value of teaching survey courses? Are they really an essential part of a philosophy education? How can one create meaningful paper assignments and tests?
  • The AAPT session will give faculty members who have taught modern philosophy survey courses for several years the chance to share tips, challenges, and strategies and aims to provide help for those who expect to be teaching modern philosophy for the first time.
  • Submissions are encouraged from teachers at two-year as well as four-year colleges.
