OpIvy perception demoI've long been using 'Wrong 'em Boyo' by The Clash to demonstrate the conceptual influence on perception in linguistic audition. If you haven't seen the flash movie, which I've demonstrated pretty much everywhere, click here. Anyway, I've gotten a little sick of it, and have had a list of examples on my 'To-Do' list for some time. I've finally gotten around to one of the real gems: Operation Ivy - Here we go again (Energy). Static Link Hit Play, listen to the clip. Write down any lyrics you hear. Then Hit 'Play' again and read the lyrics when you listen. Then - just for fun - hit 'Play' a third time and experience the lyrics without reading! You can't go back to the way it originally sounded. And notice: this effect can last for a very, very long time (years, in fact). I will note that the profound effect of the third listen is actually BETTER in The Clash instance. Jesse's need to jam that many syllables into a 30 second clip makes the lyrics obscure to even those of us who have been listening for 20 years.
