AAPT Workshop for Grad Students:The AAPT (of which I am a member) and the APA (ditto) are once again offering a teaching seminar for graduate students in Philosophy. I was never able to attend the seminar when I was a grad student (Temple was too cheap back then), but I’ve heard great things about it. The application is: http://www.philosophyteachers.org/Teaching_Seminar_App.pdf
Another campus *not* discussing abortion:York University in Toronto apparently nixed a debate on abortion because of the rhetorical tactics used by one of the speakers. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve found the polarization of the topic so great as to almost preclude meaningful discussion in the classroom, so I’m sympathetic to the argument from those nixing the debate - but I do worry about squashing dissent of any kind on a college campus. It is, however, almost certainly a teachable moment:
‘Nominal essences’? or… ‘A class by any other name’All bad puns and literary illusions aside, the Washington Post has a quick article on the marketing of Philosophy classes by using intriguing names:
I still need names for Philosophy of Science, Logic and Critical Thinking. A few years ago, some students suggested ’stupid people suck’ for Critical thinking, but I suspect that was born of the 2004 presidential election result than actual marketing savvy. Anyone have any suggestions?
